Martin Poëti, Ph.D., is a graduate of the Université de Montréal, Université Laval, and the Institut des Relations internationales et stratégiques de Paris (IRIS). He holds degrees in Political Science, History, Philosophy, and Theology.

Dr. Poëti teaches geopolitics and history in the International Studies program at Royal Military College Saint-Jean. Courses taught include Geopolitics: Asia, History of China, History of Japan, Geopolitics of Religion, and Geopolitics: Middle East. His research falls into two main categories. The first focuses on Indo-Pacific geopolitics, particularly the three major Asian powers: China, Japan, and India. The second explores the geopolitics of religion, with a special interest in the diplomacy of the Holy See and the triangular relationship between religion, political modernity, and national identities. He co-edited Religions et modernités politiques, published in 2023 by Presses de l'Université de Montréal.

Between his high school studies in the United States and his university degrees, he participated in an international development program in India, backpacked across Europe from Finland to Portugal, and worked in Japan for three years.

A member of the military for nearly two decades, he served as Director of Studies at the The Canadian Forces Chaplain School and Centre (CFChSC) before working at National Defence Headquarters (Ottawa, Canada). Lieutenant-Commander Poëti was deployed in the Pacific Ocean and the Arabian Peninsula desert. As a military chaplain, he accompanied families in Afghanistan who lost a loved one in operational theatre.

Professor Poëti’s favorite animal is the Bactrian camel. By linking the two ends of the Eurasian landmass, this slow yet resilient “ship of the desert” revolutionized human history: it enabled the Silk Road and fostered encounters and dialogue between the Sinic world and the West. The Camelus bactrianus stands as a bridge between civilizations.
