Information sheet – Research Grants Programs - Federal Councils 2023-2024

Please note that the dates of many of the competitions have passed, but the information in this document will help researchers prepare their applications for future competitions when RMC Saint-Jean becomes an eligible institution for federal research council funding.

Connection Grants To support events and outreach activities geared toward short term, targeted knowledge mobilization initiatives. Events: $7,000 to $25,000

Outreach activities: $7,000 to $50,000

Transmission by the university: November 1, February 1, May 1 and August 1 (to be confirmed)
Insight Development Grants To support the initial stages of research; fund short-term research development projects (up to two years). From $7,000 to $75,000, over 1 to 2 years SSHRC portal submission: January 31, 2022, 9 a.m.

Transmission by the university: February 2, 2022
Insight Program To support new approaches to research on complex and important topics. Component A: $7,000 to $100,000

Component B: $100,001 to $400,000

Science, Nature and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC)
Discovery Grants (individual) program To support ongoing programs of research with long-term goals rather than a single short-term project or collection of projects; recognize the creativity and innovation that are at the heart of all research advances; provide long-term operating funds and can facilitate access to funding from other programs. No limit / 5 years Notice of intent: August 2, 2022

Discovery Development Grants To support for researchers from small universities whose Discovery Grant (DG) application, although deemed of sufficient quality to warrant support, was not funded through the DG competition. Up to $30,000 over 2 years No deadlines
DND/NSERC Discovery Grant SupplementsFootnote 2 To provide resources to support non-confidential academic research projects aimed at developing specific dual-use (non-weapons) technologies in targeted defense and security areas. Up to $120,000 over 3 years Submission: November 1st
Research Tools and Instruments grants program Allows the purchase of research tools and instruments whose net cost is between $7,001 and $150,000.   Submission: October 25, 2022
Interdisciplinary programs
Discovery Horizons (pilot) To support research projects initiated by researchers (individuals and teams) that integrate or transcend several disciplines to advance knowledge in the natural sciences or engineering. From $50,000 to $100,000 per year (up to 5 years) Notice of intent: June 16, 2022

New Frontiers in Research Fund (FNFR) Program Exploration
To support high-risk, high-reward and interdisciplinary research. It seeks to inspire projects that bring disciplines together beyond traditional disciplinary or common interdisciplinary approaches by research teams with the capacity to explore something new that might fail, but that has the potential for a significant impact.
$250,000, over 2 years Notice of Intent - Convergence Portal Submission: June 28, 2022

Program International
To support international collaborations by funding joint projects launched with international organizations on subjects of international interest and by a fund intended to support the participation of Canadian researchers within international teams for the execution of projects that seek funding from major global platforms.
