Commandant

This year, the Royal Military College Saint-Jean (RMC Saint-Jean) celebrated the 60th anniversary of its founding. RMC Saint-Jean's excellent reputation is not solely the result of the successes achieved by its graduates but also the result of its faculty which has and continues to leave no stone unturned to ensure that our students get the best education possible. This excellence and professionalism is not limited to the classroom. In fact, their many reviews of theses, articles in professional journals, chapters in larger academic works, books or presentation of papers at conferences, over the years, have contributed significantly to the world of research and hence to our institution's reputation and credibility. As this report demonstrates, the 2011-2012 academic year was a very good year in this regard.
Such results do not happen without serious efforts. Many hours as well as personal and professional discipline are required to produce which such regularity and quality. These professors that contributed these works deserve the most heartfelt congratulations. Their successes bring credibility and prestige to the institution and contributed significantly to the promoting the College at home and abroad. We are very proud to have them on our team.
Colonel Guy Maillet
Commandant
RMC Saint-Jean
Academic Director

This Report of the Commandant on the research activities and funding of the Royal Military College Saint-Jean faculty demonstrates the importance of these activities for our institution.
Research contributes to the professional development of the person who executes it, to the reputation of the institution where he or she serves, and to the quality of the education offered, while contributing to the advancement of knowledge in general. Royal Military College Saint-Jean faculty members provide the best teaching possible to officer cadets, but they also contribute to the general furthering of knowledge and its passage on to the scientific community in their respective discipline.
Either directing their own research programme or collaborating with research groups in other academic institutions, RMC Saint-Jean professors have demonstrated an enduring vitality for the College. The number and scope of the activities contained in this report attest to this fact.

Department of Science
The mission of the Science Department is to offer the highest quality education in science to the officer cadets of the College. Courses are offered in one of the two official languages. The Department strives to promote the individualized acquisition of the scientific method by officer cadets and to develop the knowledge and skills required to succeed in university Science and Engineering programs.
This year, the Marian Olynyk Award for excellence in teaching recognized a departmental faculty member, Alexandre Giguère, for his outstanding teaching in Chemistry. This is the third consecutive year where the prize is awarded to the Science Department. Also, two of our professors, Sylvie Mainville and Bernard Mongeau, received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in recognition of their contributions to our College and the Canadian Forces.
In addition to teaching, departmental faculty actively develop state of the art educational materials and innovative teaching methods. They also organize various educational activities allowing officer-cadets not only to acquire knowledge but also to broaden their scientific horizons. These activities include conferences, outings, science clubs as well as knowledge integration projects under the individual supervision of faculty members.
Our faculty is also very active in the scientific/academic community, thus enhancing the reputation of the College. Professor Denis Lavigne has been a member of the Executive Board of the Association Mathématique du Québec (AMQ) and acts as vice-president for a second consecutive year. He also supervises the annual AMQ congress held in October and supervises the college level AMQ mathematics competitive contest at the provincial level.

Language Center
The Language Centre at the Royal Military College Saint-Jean offers twenty academic courses in English and French Second Language. These post secondary courses are accredited by the Ministry of Education of Quebec, and they are compulsory; students must pass their language courses in order to receive a college diploma. On arrival, students are streamed in accordance with their proficiency levels in the second language, and they are subsequently placed in one of four levels of instruction ranging from beginning to advanced. The goals of all language courses are to help to prepare students for university studies in a wide range of disciplines and to develop students' abilities to communicate effectively as future officers in the Canadian Forces.
All college students in Quebec must take a minimum of two credited language courses: one general course aimed at developing communicative competencies in four global linguistic skills, and one specific purpose course aimed at developing language knowledge, skills, and abilities in specific academic disciplines. The Centre also offers four non-credit courses to officer cadets who must continue to upgrade their second language proficiency levels in order to meet National Defense standards.
In addition to teaching, faculty members in the Language Centre develop new material, organize bilingual and cultural programs, manage projects, and conduct research in the following areas:
- teaching language and culture;
- the relationship between sociolinguistic competence and cultural intelligence;
- teaching language through poetry;
- integrating information and communication technologies and multimedia into the classroom;
- bilingual education;
- language acquisition; and
- mentoring.

Gala Leadership 60
