Message from the Commandant

Colonel Jennie Carignan Commandant RMC Saint-Jean

I am proud to present this comprehensive report on the research activities and funding of the RMC Saint-Jean Faculty. This report underscores the scope and breadth of research that is conducted at the College and it is a clear testament to the fact that academics at RMC Saint-Jean is thriving.

Research is at the very heart of our institution and stimulates professor development in their area of expertise. Through their exceptional work, our professors have demonstrated that they are amongst the best in the academic world, and this has a direct impact on the quality of education offered to officer cadets attending this fine institution.

Academics is one of the components of the RMC Saint-Jean curriculum, together with Leadership, Sports and Bilingualism. The strength of the RMC Saint-Jean curriculum resides in the fact that it offers well-balanced training and education to the future leadership of the Canadian Armed Forces. We pride ourselves in developing well-rounded officer cadets who are endowed with a solid foundation of critical thinking skills, academic rigour and acumen required to face the complex and unforeseen situations they will face over the span of their career.

"The nation that will insist on drawing a broad line of demarcation between the fighting man and the thinking man is liable to find its fighting done by fools and its thinking done by cowards"

Sir William Francis Butler

Message fron the Academic Director

Lieutenant-General (Ret'd) Michel Maisonneuve Academic Director RMC Saint-Jean

This Report of the Commandant on the research activities and funding of the RMC Faculty demonstrates the importance of these activities for our institution.

Research contributes to the professional development of the person who executes it, to the reputation of the institution where he or she serves, and to the quality of the education offered, while contributing to the advancement of knowledge in general. Royal Military College Saint-Jean Faculty members provide the best teaching possible to officer cadets, but they also contribute to the general furthering of knowledge and its passage on to the scientific community in their respective discipline. The grants received are also a testimony of the utility of this research.

Either directing their own research or collaborating with other groups conducting research, RMC Saint-Jean professors have demonstrated an enduring engagement in the College. The number and scope of the activities contained in this report attest to this fact.

Science Department

The mission of the Science Department is to offer the highest quality education in science to the officer cadets of the College. Courses are offered in one of the two official languages. The Department strives to promote the individualized acquisition of the scientific method by the officer cadets and to instill them with the knowledge and skills required to succeed in university Science & Engineering programs.

This year, we had the profound regret to lose our Director, Mrs. Monique Laberge, as she died in the Spring of 2013. We will always remember her as a passionate chemist, a real professional and a hard-working researcher. Her work was impressive and recognized all over the world. She was a strong asset for the College and will remain forever in our memories.

Departmental faculty actively develops state of the art educational materials and innovative teaching methods. They also organize various educational activities allowing officer cadets to acquire knowledge and broaden their scientific horizons. These activities include conferences, outings, science clubs, as well as integration of knowledge projects under the individual supervision of faculty members.

Our faculty members are also very active in the scientific/academic community, enhancing the reputation of the College. Professor Denis Lavigne is a long-time member of the Executive Board of the Association mathématique du Québec (AMQ) and acts as Vice President for a third consecutive year. He also supervised the annual AMQ congress held in October and supervises the provincial AMQ mathematics contest at the high school and college levels.

The effort of our research professors is focused on the following fields: In Biological Sciences (1 peer-reviewed publication in 2012), research is centered on muscle regeneration, gene therapy, inflammation, muscle physiology and pharma-cology. In Mathematics (1 peer-reviewed publication in 2013), the focus of research is on the mathematical modeling of energy-economy-environment technology systems.

Language Department

The Language Department at the Royal Military College Saint-Jean offers twenty academic courses in English and French Second Language. These post-secondary courses are accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology, and they are compulsory; students must pass their language courses in order to receive a college diploma. On arrival, students are streamed in accordance with their proficiency levels in the second language, and they are subsequently placed in one of four levels of instruction ranging from beginner to advanced. The goals of all language courses are to help prepare students for university studies in a wide range of disciplines, and to develop students' abilities to communicate effectively as future officers in the Canadian Armed Forces.

All college students in Quebec must take a minimum of two credited language courses: one general course aimed at developing commu-nicative competencies in four global linguistic skills, and one specific purpose course aimed at developing language knowledge, skills, and abilities in specific academic disciplines. The Language Department also offers four non-credit courses to officer cadets who must continue to upgrade their second language proficiency levels in order to meet National Defense standards.

In addition to teaching, Language Department faculty members develop new material, structure bilingual and cultural programs, organize cultural activities and events to promote bilingualism, act mentors to the students, manage projects, and conduct research, namely in the following areas:

  • language and culture teaching;
  • language and literature teaching;
  • the relationship between sociolinguistic competence and cultural intelligence;
  • teaching language through poetry;
  • integrating information and communication technologies (ICT) into the classroom;
  • education in a bilingual environment;
  • bilingualism and multilingualism; and
  • testing.
