Academics

Studies are at the heart of officer training. They are, of course, aimed at the acquisition of knowledge and the development of skills in a specific discipline, but in a deeper way, common to all officer cadets and naval cadets who pass through RMC Saint-Jean. They aim to develop critical thinking rooted in a vast general culture at the service of the profession of arms. The first milestone in postsecondary education for future officers, RMC Saint-Jean offers two college programmes that are closely integrated with the undergraduate university programmes offered by RMC in Kingston, Ontario, and the Bachelor of Arts in International Studies offered at RMC Saint-Jean. The curriculum supports the acquisition of the intellectual skills needed to understand the complex issues of the 21st century and integrate theoretical knowledge acquired in classrooms into everyday activities and the military environment.

The CMCs are entirely devoted to their mission based on an educational vision that aims to develop officer cadets and naval cadets with critical thinking skills rooted in a vast general culture serving the profession of arms.

Preparatory Year

Preparatory Year is equivalent to grade 12 (Canada outside of Quebec) and to the first year of college-level studies (CEGEP) in Quebec. For Quebec high-school graduates, it is the normal entry point into the CMCs. This academic year is also designed for applicants from across Canada who demonstrate strong academic ability but are missing mandatory prerequisites for direct admission to First Year.

First Year

This year is equivalent to the second year of CEGEP in Quebec (This academic year provides the necessary credits and prerequisites for university-level programmes offered at Royal Military College of Canada (RMC) in Kingston). Applicants who meet the prerequisites are admitted in First Year at RMC in Kingston or at RMC Saint-Jean without the need to attend Preparatory Year.

Second, Third and Fourth Years

The naval and officer cadets that have successfully completed First Year then pursue their university studies at one or the other CMC (over three years normally) leading to obtaining their bachelor degree.
